HBM Holdings acquires Breen Energy Solutions

{ST. LOUIS, MO} HBM Holdings Company announced today that it acquired Breen Energy Solutions, LLC, headquartered in Carnegie, PA. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Breen provides emissions measurement and mitigation technologies to the utility and industrial boiler markets, in addition to other emissions controls, fuel flexibility and mercury control technologies. The company was founded in 2002 by Dr. Bernard Breen, a pioneer in the field of NOx (nitrogen oxides) reduction and an inventor who has generated more than 30 patents.

BREEN’S BREAKTHROUGH DEMERC TECHNOLOGY PREVENTS MERCURY RE-EMISSION AND CAPTURES ELEMENTAL MERCURY

Breen Energy Solutions (BES) is announcing its DeMerc scrubber additive technology at the Mega Symposium August 19 – 21. DeMerc is the first and only additive technology that not only prevents re-emission of oxidized mercury (Hg) in the scrubber, but also captures elemental mercury (Hg) and a variety of other metals.

Breen’s Chetan Chothani is presenting on this breakthrough technology, featuring data from a demonstration of DeMerc held at a 465-megawatt power generation station. The results were exciting:
• 98% capture of oxidized mercury (re-emission suppression);
• 50 – 75% capture of elemental mercury;
• capture of other elemental metals

Breen Launches App to Calculate Dewpoint from Acid Gas PPM

{Carnegie, PA} Breen Energy Solutions (BES) launched an App which provides an easy way to calculate the PPM of acid gases if its Dewpoint is known, or to calculate the expected Dewpoint of acid gases for a given PPM level. The user simply enters the known data (PPM of acid gas or Dewpoint), enters additional inputs of Moisture and Duct Pressure and the App calculates the PPM or expected Dewpoint.

This application is specifically designed for Fossil Fired boilers, however the calculations are universal. Specific Acids included are: SO3/H2SO4, HCl, HBr, SO2/H2SO3 and NO2/HNO3.
In addition, the PPM to DP tab also provides for an easy way to calculate Water (H2O) dewpoint for a given Moisture content.

“This is the second app Breen has launched to help make a calculation simpler,” said Chetan Chothani, Breen Energy Solutions Vice President. “While a small application, this is what Breen does: develop technologies and applications to support fossil-fired plants manage acid gas.”

Breen Applies Acid Gas Technologies to Measure Sulfuric Acid in HRSGs

{Carnegie, PA} Breen Energy Solutions (BES) successfully applied their industry leading AbSensor-SO3 Acid Dewpoint Monitor in Gas and Oil Fired Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power units with Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) to measure ultra low levels of Sulfuric Acid. Typical Acid Gas dewpoints, in this application, are expected to be in the 140 to 180 DegF range which would correspond to levels below 0.1 ppm. This innovation will lead to new applications and opportunities in CCGT-HRSG power plants, such as cold-side economizer temperature control for corrosion protection and improved efficiency.

“This is the kind of application of technology that Breen does best,” said Cal Lockert, Breen Energy Solutions President. “These are the types of individual innovations that when combined, can create an overall significant improvement in plant efficiency.”

After a successful test of the process, Breen has sold the technology in a first commercial application.

News from Air Quality IX – Breen Introduces Co-Firing Process

The Air Quality Conference is a conference on emission control, especially around the critical issues facing the United States and world with respect to air quality and carbon management issues. Breen Environmental Solutions participated in the show making multiple presentations.

Some Highlights:

Breen presented several papers and posters at the Air Quality IX event. Particular interest was in Breen’s new co-firing process. Co-firing natural gas in coal burners is the next innovation by Breen for fuel flexibility and reducing emissions such as NOx, SO2 and CO2.

Also at the show, Breen ES announced it has filed disclosures for a co-fired ignitor for coal burners.

Breen Energy Solutions Granted Patent for Control of Sulfur-Trioxide SO3 in China

{Carnegie, PA} Breen Energy Solutions (BES) announced today that its patent application for ‘Method and Apparatus for Detection, Measurement and Control of Sulfur-trioxide (SO3) and Other Condensables in Flue Gas’ has been granted in China (reference number 200910211691.9). Breen has previously received patents for this process in the U.S. as well as Europe. Detection, control and mitigation of sulfur condensables is critical to the prevention of their release with flue gas as well as the balance-of-plant impacts to coal-fired power generation plants and other industrial applications.

“Management and mitigation of acid gases is a worldwide concern,” said Cal Lockert, Breen Energy Solutions President. “We are continuing to develop methods, processes and technologies to help reach compliance standards while maintaining profitability of the plant.”

Breen’s patent abstract explains the advantages of real-time detection conducted by the probe rather than traditional extraction and testing methods. Breen has incorporated the probe technology in numerous testing and mitigation projects at power plants around the world.

The patent application for its detection device continues the tradition of Breen innovation in the control of power plant emmissions started by the firm’s founder, Dr. Bernard Breen. Breen Energy Solutions and its engineers hold more than a dozen patents in the United States.

Breen conducts Dry Sorbent Injection demonstrations and installations for SO3 mitigation using Lime, Trona and other dry sorbents. BES also performs wet sorbent injection using Magnesium Oxide for slag control and SO3 mitigation.

Breen Energy Announces Major Contracts

These include the sale of a semi-permanent Dry Sorbent Injection system to a Mid-West utility, multiple AbSensor-SO3 condensables monitoring systems to some of the nations largest utilities and two test programs focused on HCl and Hg capture that include Dry Sorbent and Activated Carbon Injection.

Breen Presenting on Acid Gas Issues at Air Quality IX Conference

Breen acid gas experts will be presenting abstracts on a variety of issues related to air quality at the Air Quality IX Conference in Arlington, Virginia. The conference runs October 21 – 23, 2013.

Cal Lockert will be presenting a paper entitled “Coal-Gas Cofiring for Environmental and Commercial Benefit”. The presention is scheduled for 8:00am, October 22.

Robert Branning will be presenting a paper entitled “Impacts of Acid Gas and Sorbent Stratification on SO3 Capture”. The presentation is scheduled for 1:30pm, October 22.

Breen Energy Launches Sulfuric Acid Dewpoint Monitor AbSensor-ADM Used in Oil- and Gas-Fired Applications

{Carnegie, PA} Breen Energy Solutions announced the release of a new product, the AbSensor-ADM, specifically designed to measure Sulfuric Acid Dewpoint. This new instrument is designed for oil- and gas-fired boilers and other industrial applications and is priced aggressively for those markets.

“This new product is a line extension that serves another sector in our target industries,” said Cal Lockert, Breen Energy Solutions President. “Our goal is to provide the acid gas knowledge, products and services necessary to assure environmental compliance and commercial profitability for our industrial users.”

The current Acid gas condensables measurement devices commercialized by Breen, the AbSensor-SO3 and AbSensor-AbS, are designed for the challenging applications found in utility coal-fired boiler applications. These instruments are more expensive and have advanced functionality not required for situations in which only Acid Dewpoint measurement is desired and the flue gas composition is not particularly challenging. The AbSensor-ADM is ideal for low-dust flue gas applications in the 100 to 350 Degree Fahrenheit range. The primary application for this device is measurement of Sulfuric Acid Dewpoint in small boiler and industrial applications.
